Best Road Trip Movies

The road trip movie: whether it's a family outing gone horribly wrong, or a cross-country thriller, sometimes all some characters need is to be stuck in a car to get the sparks flying. Here are a few of our picks for the best road trip movies.
”Midnight Run”. This 1988 action comedy stars Robert Di Niro and Charles Grodin as a tough bounty hunter and mob accountant, respectively. The two have to get from New York City to Los Angeles in five days, and they use every means at their disposal to try and get there in time. Like the other movies on this list, “Midnight Run” has aged well and still holds up after a few decades.
”National Lampoon's Vacation”. The benchmark comedy for family vacations gone wrong, this is the “Vacation” film that started them all. Chevy Chase piles his family into the Family Truckster and hijinks ensue. This comedy is just as funny now as it was back in 1983.
”Planes, Trains & Automobiles”. Another fantastic comedy, this 1987 film stars comedy legends Steve Martin and John Candy as unlikely travel companions as they try to make it from New York City to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving. As the title suggests, the duo end up sampling pretty much every means of transportation possible.
”Easy Rider”. Shifting gears from comedy to drama, this 1969 classic stars Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as two hippie bikers touring through the American south, 'looking for America'. What they end up finding is a lot of trouble.
”Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior”. This 1981 sci-fi classic stars a young Mel Gibson as a drifter who helps an outpost transport their precious gasoline across dangerous wastelands. The movie has garnered such a cult following that enthusiasts still gather to show off their mutant muscle car creations.
