Tips for Surviving Road Rage
If you’re out on the roads, road rage is a fact of life. And if you’re driving an RV or pulling a trailer, you might be drawing more road rage just for the fact that you’re not racing at the same high speeds as some people. Here are a few tips for surviving road rage, both from other drivers and your own.
Stay calm. If you’re on the receiving end of someone else’s road rage, it’s important to keep your own head. Don’t give in to taunts or a desire to get even. The best revenge is ignoring them, and concentrating on your own driving. Sometimes a person can misconstrue something you did as a slight against them, and if you give in to their road rage, you’ve just thrown gasoline on a match.
Let go of machismo. If you’re a man driving, there can be a macho urge to show the other driver that you’re the boss and impress your passengers. Ignore this impulse and remember that staying safe is the best way to impress your passengers.
Forgive and forget. The highway is no place for grudges, and you aren’t going to get an apology out of the other person. Be the bigger person and let it go right away. Driving aggressively puts you, your passengers, and anyone around you at risk. It’s worth swallowing your pride and letting it slide than getting a ticket or worse, an accident.
Call for backup. If you’re being harassed on the road, and it’s clear the other driver isn’t letting it go, call the police to intervene. Road rage can result in a fatal disaster, and it’s important you take it seriously and take advantage of whatever resources you can. If you’re in an area where you can pull over and enter a business to wait, all the better. Some highways have a special number you can use to report aggressive drivers.
Always keep in mind that you are in control of your own emotions and that it’s up to you what you let affect you. Happy trails and safe travels out there!
