Fun Winter Vacation Spots
January 03, 2013
With winter's chill grip settling in for the next few months, the idea of taking a break for warmer climes may seem more desirable than ever. Here are a few of our favorite snowbird destinations, and if we've overlooked yours, let us know!
Coachella Valley, California. Located about two hours inland from Los Angeles, the Coachella valley is one of the most popular snowbird spots, and for a few obvious reasons. There's very little precipitation in the winter, and the average temperature is 63 degrees. In addition to the almost perfect climate, you have Joshua Tree National Park nearby, as well as California's largest lake, the Salton Sea. For the nightlife there's the incredible restaurants in nearby Palm Springs, as well as plenty of casinos sprinkled around.
Cocoa Beach, Florida. An hour from Orlando on the Atlantic coast sits little Cocoa Beach, a formerly bustling tourist town that has slowed down with the demise of NASA's manned space flight programs. There are still plenty of perks aside from shuttle launches, however (the average high in January is 72 degrees). There are endless beaches to explore, including the nearby Jetty park, where you can watch submarines coming and going. Nearby Merritt Island is home to plenty of shopping options and a movie theater.
Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Perhaps Texas' most popular snowbird spot, the Rio Grande valley is right on the Gulf of Mexico, bordered by Mexico on the south. Winter temperatures average in the high 60's. The most popular attraction is nearby South Padre Island, which hosts 'Winter Texas' for seasonal visitors.
