When you purchase a new car, selling it is probably the last thing on your mind. Years later, however, it's almost inevitable that you'll end up selling your current vehicle and upgrading to something new. As foreign as the idea might seem, it's wise to consider your car's resale value long before making a sale. Otherwise, you may one day struggle to profit on a beaten-down product. We've devised a few ways to maintain your car's value, so you can be sure someone will want it when it comes time to sell.

1. Keep it smelling fresh

When cruising happily down the freeway, we may not pick up on every small, unfortunate detail in our vehicles. Many used cars come with a significant problem that previous owners aren't fully aware of: a stench that permeates the vehicle, serving as a blaring reminder of those who owned it before. This smell may be from dirty diapers, greasy fast food meals, or cigarette smoke. No matter where the scent originates, it's an unwanted quality that most would prefer to get rid of. To nip this smelly problem in the bud, you should pay attention to what smells you allow to seep into your car. It may be better to hold off on your takeout burger until you get home, so the distinct odor doesn't linger for the next owner. Cigarette smoke is the most diabolical culprit, as this is a scent that's nearly impossible to get rid of. Avoid smoking inside your car; you'll keep it in better shape for reselling. Air fresheners are also a good investment that can combat bad smells and replace them with more pleasant ones.

2. Perform maintenance regularly

Believe it or not, routine car maintenance is key to keeping your vehicle in excellent condition. When you neglect a car for years, this will be obvious to anyone who uses it in the future. Just like we take vitamins and make regular doctor's appointments to maintain our health, we must check in with our cars and perform the menial tasks that keep them running smoothly. A dedicated car owner should observe the vehicle's oil and maintain it well. Furthermore, tire pressure should be checked regularly. For a thorough understanding of all that constitutes good car maintenance, check out this list. Though these steps may feel taxing while doing them, you'll be pleased you put in the effort when your car's high value is retained over several years.

3. Keep the inside and outside clean

Because they get so much use, it's only natural that aging cars look a little worse for wear. There's a difference between old and filthy, though; you don't want a vehicle that's truly falling to pieces. As with humans, basic hygiene improves a vehicle's health, strength, and appeal. While it's easy to let your car's interior get messy, too much dirt and debris can harm its value. The best practice is to vacuum consistently, avoiding the buildup of loose crumbs or stray dust bunnies. Taking floor mats out to wash them is also smart, because these surfaces can easily get disgusting and dirty. As for the car's exterior, waxing can protect paint from chipping. Likewise, scrubbing it down every few weeks will keep off mud, grass, and dead bugs.

4. Be wary of modifications

There's no accounting for taste. Unfortunately, one person's dream car may look painfully tacky to someone else. When customizing your car, we understand the urge to make it unique to your specific preferences. However, we also recommend being mindful of future buyers. A hot pink paint job or flame decal may look great to you, but it can also make selling harder. At the very least, be prepared to reverse your modifications before it comes time to sell.

5. Save mileage

Of the items on this list, this one is probably the most difficult to stick to. A car with lower mileage is generally worth more, but acquiring high mileage is borderline unavoidable for many people. When possible, using public transport can help save money as well as cut down on mileage.
