4WD and AWD: You’ve probably seen these acronyms, but do you know what they really mean?

These two drivetrain types may seem similar at first glance, but they actually have several key differences. If you’re struggling to choose between the two, keep reading to learn what these drivetrain systems are and who exactly they’re geared toward.

What is an AWD vehicle?

All-wheel drive vehicles are pretty much exactly what they sound like: instead of sending power to just two wheels, an AWD vehicle powers all four. Thinking of buying an AWD vehicle? First on your agenda should be choosing which kind of AWD fits your driving style.

If you pick a car with full-time AWD, expect a vehicle that’s always in go-mode. Full-time AWD vehicles send power to all four wheels continuously, providing nonstop traction and 24/7 stability.

Part-time AWD vehicles can double as more standard cars, because they work in 2WD mode until sensors detect a need for AWD. When a part-time AWD vehicle feels itself losing grip, it’ll have your back and switch to AWD mode automatically.

What is a 4WD vehicle?

For hardcore off-roaders, four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles are a lifeline. These systems split power between a vehicle’s front and rear axles, giving you better traction on uneven terrain. If one wheel slips, the others in a 4WD vehicle will pick up the slack.

When driving a 4WD vehicle, you’ll have total control. These vehicles typically function in 2WD by default, and you can easily swap into 4WD using the gearshift.

Versatile and adventure-ready, some 4WD vehicles even have multiple settings. With 4 High mode, you can take on slippery roads at speeds of up to 55 mph. 4 Low is basically the exact opposite, giving you an edge in challenging terrain like mud, snow, and rock, and helping you move slowly while staying in control.

4WD vs AWD: Which is right for me?

If you’re reading this, I bet I can guess the question weighing on your mind. You’re stuck between 4WD and AWD and need a little help making a decision. This choice isn’t something to take lightly, and it’s also not a debate with one clear answer. To figure out which drivetrain is best for you, you have to think about your lifestyle.

When to choose 4WD

Let’s get into a few details that’ll help you decide if 4WD is the way to go.

When AWD might be a fit

Now it’s time to dig into what makes AWD vehicles distinct from 4WD vehicles.

ProsCons
