When misfortune strikes, preparation makes damage mitigation easier. Auto accidents are prevalent, with thousands of them taking place each year in the U.S. The aftermath of a crash is often confusing, stressful, and emotionally taxing. But if you arm yourself with the proper knowledge, it doesn't have to be! After a car accident, you should know what procedures will help the process go smoothly. We've listed the significant steps you can take in the aftermath of a crash to preserve your health, car, and sanity.

1. Check for injuries

When panic sets in, we sometimes forgo logic. Even in the middle of an anxiety-inducing crash, though, it's essential to consider what really matters: the safety and well-being of you and those around you. Before doing anything else, check for injuries on yourself and any passengers you may have. If necessary, seek medical attention by calling 911. Severe injuries should be attended to before you address any other problems. That might mean saving car insurance talk for later so you can prioritize your health. Keeping a first aid kit in your car can help in a situation like this, equipping you with the ability to treat minor cuts, burns, and abrasions.

2. Move vehicles out of the way

As soon as you can, pull off to a safe spot so you don't disrupt the traffic flow. Turn on your hazard lights to alert surrounding drivers of the circumstances. This will keep you and the people around you safer and make it easier to communicate with other drivers involved in the crash.

3. Photograph the scene

An ideal scenario won't involve disputes, but you never know what kind of person may crash into you. If the other driver(s) in an altercation disagrees with your perspective on the events, you could run into problems with insurance. Because of this, it's best to document the scene with pictures. Photograph pictures of your car and the surrounding area, and you can provide the insurance company with valuable insight into the accident. The insurance company can also use photographs to estimate how pricey repairs will be.

4. Notify police

Though emergency medical care may not be necessary, the local police department should still be alerted that an accident occurred. Being willing to answer all questions will make the process easier for everyone. Be honest about everything that happened so the police can file an accurate report. It's also best to request a copy of this report to give to your insurance company.

5. Exchange information

Even in this naturally tense situation, everyone involved should keep their tempers cool. Be sure to exchange information (including phone number, license plate number, vehicle model and make, and insurance information) with other drivers. If witnesses are in the area, ask permission to take down their numbers, too. Gathering this information may feel nosy, but it's important to have it in case a lawsuit occurs. It can also be helpful for your insurance company.

6. File a claim

Once you've resolved all immediate concerns, it will be time for you to file a claim with your insurance company. Contact your insurance company and have crucial information at your disposal to share with them. They'll likely ask for the pictures you took of the scene and the insurance info you collected from the other driver. They may also want the contact information for your local police department so they can reach out and see if someone filed a report.

7. Contact an attorney

If you feel it's necessary, contacting an attorney is an option after an auto accident. Many choose to do this, mainly if they have limited legal knowledge and/or need clarification on the insurance claim process. Speaking with an attorney may help you sort your thoughts and better understand the information you receive from the insurance company.
