Stock Shows Around America
A stock show is an event that showcases ‘stock’ animals such as cattle, horses, sheep, and other livestock. It’s often accompanied by a rodeo and other entertaining events, such as a horse show. Here are a few of the nation’s stock shows worth checking out.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The world’s largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition, the Houston show runs from February 25th to March 17th at Reliant Stadium. It’s been running since 1931 and has drawn some of the top performers in the world through the years, such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson, to name a few. Some of the entertainment events include a rodeo and the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que contest.
Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Considered Pennsylvania’s State Fair, the Farm Show runs January 5th to the 12th, and is celebrating its 97th year in 2013. The Farm Show features everything from animal exhibitions with over 6,000 animals, to culinary events and wine tastings.
National Western Stock Show.
One of the oldest stock shows in the country, the National Western has been operating since 1906. It runs from January 12th to the 27th, and kicks off with a stock parade through downtown Denver. It’s the world’s largest stock show in terms of animals shown. Events include a horse show, rodeo, and western art expo, which draws some of the best artists in the nation.
