Top Towing Trucks in Every Class

Not every person uses vehicles merely for transportation. Other objectives, like towing, are equally as important in certain professions. Trucks are divided into categories (Heavy Duty, Medium Duty, and Light Duty) based on how much they can carry. If towing is a must-have for your next vehicle, read our guide on the best tow trucks in each class.
Light-Duty Trucks
Trucks are classified based on their Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings, meaning how much weight they can handle in total. This number includes the weight of the vehicle itself and the weight of passengers, cargo, and fuel. Trucks that can carry under 14,000 pounds are classified as light-duty and comprise the weakest category. Despite being unable to hold quite as much weight as their counterparts, many light-duty trucks are still more capable of towing sufficiently. We looked into a few of the best options for towing if lighter-duty trucks are what you’re interested in.
Chevron 408
You’ll likely recognize the brand name Chevron because they’ve consistently produced high-quality vehicles. The Chevron 408 includes a boom lift, a device that allows workers to reach higher spaces by moving them upward. It also consists of a wheel lift, a feature used to transport other vehicles by attaching to their wheels. The Chevron 408 can lift up to 8,000 pounds. To put this in perspective, 8000 pounds is roughly the size of an adult hippopotamus.
Holmes 220
Although the Holmes 220 may look like a standard pickup truck, it’s a great pick for light-duty towing. This truck is equipped with modern technology, and all raising/lifting can be done remotely. The Holmes 220 is commonly used for relocating other vehicles, and its towing capacity is 8,000 pounds.
2024 GMC Sierra 1500
Able to carry up to 13,300 pounds, this truck can carry the most weight out of our light-duty selections. The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 has multiple engine options and three different cab sizes.
Medium-Duty Trucks
A medium-duty truck is, as the name suggests, a truck that straddles the line between the largest and smallest classes of trucks. Trucks with a GVWR between 14,001-26,000 pounds are considered medium-duty.
2024 Ram 3500
With a towing capacity of 23,000 pounds, the 2024 Ram 3500 is firmly in the medium-duty category. Though it doesn’t have great fuel efficiency, a backup camera and Bluetooth system make this a comfortable ride.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado
With a time-honored brand like Chevrolet, it’s no surprise this truck model is an excellent pick for medium-duty towing. With a capacity of up to 20,000 pounds, this truck has modern features like keyless ignition and a pedestrian detection system.
Heavy-Duty Trucks
For those who commonly lift large loads, a heavy-duty truck is your best bet. Heavy-duty trucks have towing capacities between 26,000 and 33,000 pounds.
Century 3212
Capable of sustaining 32,000 pounds of weight, the Century 3212 is designed to be a recovery unit. This means that it relocates other vehicles that have broken down. The winch, or the device supporting a tow car, can carry 15,000 pounds. In-cab controls, extra lifting attachments, and a wireless remote control are some optional features you can add to your Century 3212 truck.
Holmes 600R
Like the Century 3212, the Holmes 600R holds 32,000 pounds. This truck has a “knee-boom” style of lift that can lift vehicles and other equipment up to 81”. The Holmes 600R also comes equipped with three sets of towing forks and a control station on the vehicle’s passenger side.
2024 Ford Super Duty F-450
The 2024 Ford Super Duty F-450 has a towing capacity of 30,000. The front seats are cooled, and there’s an around-view camera, so you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable driving this truck.
