The COVID-19 pandemic had many well-documented downsides, but there were a handful of good things to come out of it. One good thing was the realization that a lot of jobs can and should be done remotely. Another was growth in the so-called “gig economy.” For RV owners, these two realizations marked an increase in career opportunities while living the RV life, full-time. Here are a few of the best careers we found for permanent RV dwellers.

Travel nurse

If you are already a nurse or are in the process of becoming one, life as a travel nurse may be a great way to combine your career with your love of travel. A successful travel nurse will have a degree in nursing and have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) as well as a year or two of experience. Once you have enough experience to hone your nursing acumen, you may consider signing on with one of the many travel nurse agencies. Agencies represent you in negotiations with local organizations, and they can help you find housing (including a place to park an RV), reimburse costs, and streamline onboarding to new locums, saving you valuable time and money while travel nursing.

Travel nursing can be a financially lucrative career for full-time RVers. Many contracts pay high hourly rates and add per diem offerings along with your salary. Living in an RV may also help cut housing expenses, adding that savings to your overall profit. Make sure to check with your agency and other resources to ensure that you meet all of the licensure and experience requirements of the area to which you travel.

Photographer

Think of all the beautiful sights you have seen while traveling in your RV that you could share with others! If you have talent and passion for being behind the camera, you can combine that with your love of travel and make money while sharing your trip with others. You may be able to sell the photos through photography websites or directly to consumers at local flea markets and art galleries in the towns where you visit or stay: the possibilities are as endless as the destinations.

Travel writing

If you enjoy writing about your experiences, travel blogging may be a great way for you to combine your passion for travel and writing talents. You can write articles about locations you visit, attractions along the way, the RV gear you are using, resources you found helpful, how-to articles, or stories about the interesting people you encounter. Quality photos add to the appeal of your blogs, so you could even combine photography and writing for a full package. You can monetize your writing by using a website targeted toward freelancers, build your own digital storefront, or sell your work to travel, lifestyle, or leisure websites or magazines to help them meet their content needs.

Gig work

Websites like Fivver, Upwork, and Legiit offer freelancers a marketplace to match their skills to buyers looking for them. Since all of the work is remote, it may be a great fit when it comes to careers for full-time RV travelers. While communicating with the site and buyers requires an internet connection, much of the work can even be performed offline and then uploaded from your hotspot or when you are near a Wi-Fi connection, making it a great fit for those with a thirst for more extreme adventures.

Towing/Driving

Whether delivering an RV to a new owner or for an owner who wants their RV relocated, there are jobs available to tow travel trailers to drive RVs and other equipment to their new homes. Often, these are hired out as independent contractors or through companies like Horizon Transport.

As a contractor, you have some control over the destinations you accept and how frequently you work. There are some drawbacks though: The destinations aren’t always places you may dream of visiting, and your own rig will have to stay parked while you deliver someone else’s. But, on the plus side, your job is quite literally just to travel where the wind takes you.

Web development

If you have skills in web development and programming, it’s increasingly common for companies in the technology industry to allow people to work entirely remotely. As long as you have a laptop and reliable internet connection, you can provide companies and/or clients with website design and development services, anywhere you find yourself. Web development and design is a lucrative career with plenty of flexibility and upward mobility, so you may find yourself in an early retirement situation sooner than you’d thought!

These are just a few careers for RV travelers. With remote work becoming easier and more commonplace, there are opportunities in many fields like human resources, accounting, marketing, healthcare, technology, and more. You are really only limited by your imagination.
