America’s Great Truck Stops

Truck stops are the oases of the American Interstate. A place to pause in your journey, fill up on gas for your ride and perhaps some coffee for your own fuel tank. Maybe you’ll just be getting a bite and moving on, or perhaps you’ll be staying the night. Even if you aren’t a trucker and just a road warrior, here are five spots worth the stop.

A Truck Stop here and a truck stop there…

Johnson’s Corner, Colorado. Located on I-25 just south of Loveland, Johnson’s Corner’s main claim to fame is their ‘World Famous’ cinnamon roll. But that’s not all. Travel & Leisure magazine rated them one of the top 10 best breakfast spots in the world, and Food Network declared them the Top Truck Stop Restaurant in 2004.

Iowa 80, Iowa. Just off Interstate 80, exit 284, in Walcott, Iowa, is the home of the world’s largest truck stop. Four times the size of the average stop, with 450 employees, this megaplex is also home to the annual Truckers Jamboree every summer. They even have a dentist, just in case you need a tooth yanked mid-trip.

South of the Border, South Carolina. Located in Dillon, this truck stop is part functional, part tourist attraction. In addition to the usual truck stop amenities, South of the Border also offers an amusement park, wedding chapel, and reptile lagoon. Regardless of your intention for stopping, it’s a sure bet you’ll be entertained.

Jubitz Travel Center, Oregon. If you find yourself in the scenic Pacific Northwest, stop in at Jubitz Travel Center in Portland. Voted the world’s ‘classiest’ truck stop, Jubitz has hotel accommodations with 24-hour check-in, and $3 movies, which is almost worth the stop itself.

If all you want is simply a clean bathroom, supposedly you can’t get any cleaner than the Sapp Bros. stop in Sidney, Nebraska. If the bathrooms aren’t up to snuff, you can press a button that makes a light flash at the cashier stand until someone comes to check it out.
