A Class A Motorhome, also known as a Class A RV or Motorcoach, are large recreational vehicles. They’re specifically known for their luxury appeal and exceptional space. Typically, Class A Motorhomes can accommodate families or large groups of people, and they often have extensive storage space in addition to a spacious floor plan.
Class A Motorhomes are ideal for frequent, long-term travelers. They resemble an apartment on wheels and can be found with lots of amenities. Many vehicles even have sections that can pop out once the vehicle is stopped, allowing for extra space. Owners of these luxury motorcoaches often prefer to tow their own personal vehicles behind, as this allows them the freedom and flexibility to drive around once they get to their location.
If your trips are more long-term, you may want to choose the Class A RV. These motorhomes are comfortable, spacious, and built to accommodate a long-term stay. Class A motorcoaches come with tons of storage and spacious living areas.
In general, the Class B Motorhome is easiest to drive. It’s compact and can be used for shorter trips as well as long ones — eliminating the need to bring your personal vehicle along. Usually, a Class B RV will come with a small living area including a kitchen, queen-sized bed, and a toilet and shower area. Their smaller size means that they don’t use as much fuel, and they’re also affordable to repair. If you are a last-minute or a weekend traveler, the Class B Motorhome will likely be the best for you.
In many cases, you will not need a special license to drive a Class A RV. However, several states do require a license. Licensure rules are typically based on the weight of your vehicle as well as the reason for your drive. If you are driving a motorhome for business purposes, you will likely need a CDL. Washington D.C. and Hawaii also require drivers to get a CDL for non-business purposes if the motorcoach is over 26,000 pounds.
If you live in New York or Michigan, you may need to get an endorsement to operate your vehicle. Drivers in Kansas, California, Maryland, Nevada, Texas, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina may be required to hold a non-commercial class B license, depending on the length and weight of their motorhome. Because the requirements are not universal, we highly recommend checking with your state’s DMV to find out the stipulations for your specific case.
Technically, yes, it is legal in most states to move around in an RV while it’s moving. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea. We also recommend checking your local seatbelt requirements, because these vary from state to state and may require your passengers to be sitting down while the vehicle is in motion. In general, people in the driver and passenger seats are required to sit down with a seatbelt any time the car is in motion.
Rules pertaining to backseat passengers are typically less strict. Still, even if you are allowed to move around in an RV while it’s in motion, we recommend following basic safety rules. There is always the chance that the driver will need to stop quickly, and this could cause people to fall over, or could cause furniture or other items to topple as well. It’s always best to avoid hazardous situations by sitting down and using a seatbelt.
Your Class A Motorhome is an investment, and like any good investment, it will last longer under careful attention. With regular maintenance, most motorcoaches last around 10-15 years. Under a careful eye, they can be preserved for up to 25 or 30 years. If you are buying a used motorhome, remember that it has already gone through some wear and tear, and its lifecycle may be affected.
There are several ways to keep your RV or trailer in great condition. First, keep an eye on the roof. If your vehicle is more than 10 years old, you may notice leaking. Getting these repairs done right away is important, as it will help you avoid damage. Another way to lengthen the life of your RV is to keep it protected when you are not out on the road. Keep it in a storage shed or barn if you have space. Otherwise, a carport, tarp, or RV cover can go a long way toward protecting it from the elements.
I couldn’t be happier with my Newmar RV! It has the perfect amount of space for my husband and me while we check off national parks around the country.
