About Travel Trailers

The travel trailer is a staple of modern adventurous life that allows you to tow your home with you on the road. Often known as bumper-pull trailers, these units are lightweight and compact and can be attached to your regular-sized vehicle. With interiors that range from simple to luxurious, travel trailers are built to support your travel lifestyle with all the comforts of home.

At Transwest, we work with the industry’s leading manufacturers to offer the best travel trailer brands for your budget and lifestyle. We are committed to supporting you through every step of the process: from searching for the right vehicle to financing your trailer to keeping it maintained and serviced on the road.

We work with a wide variety of financing partners to ensure that we can offer you a single-source solution. Whether you plan to use your recreational vehicle for personal or commercial purposes, we offer convenient, trusted financing plans to fit your budget.

Once you’re on the road, our full-service facility is here to ensure that you are able to travel safely. We offer a range of services to keep your travel trailer in excellent condition, from interior remodeling and awning repair to courtesy unit inspections, spa services, and more.

What are the best travel trailers?

Travel trailers hold many advantages over traditional motorhomes. They are easy to tow and are typically less expensive than full-size RVs. A great option for couples or families of up to four people, many models come in a variety of floor plans to accommodate different family sizes. Some of the best brands in the travel trailer industry specialize in luxury travel trailers by offering premium models that are more expensive but well worth the investment. Many offer units that are equipped with luxurious amenities such as HD TVs, a stereo system, a fireplace, and comfortable seating — a compact yet a comparable option to the larger recreational vehicles. Other high-quality brands are known for their aluminum travel trailers that come equipped with plenty of storage space.

What is the lifespan of a travel trailer?

A travel trailer will typically last for 10 years. However, this number may vary depending on a variety of factors, such as how often the trailer is used, whether or not it has been properly maintained, and the environment where it is stored. If you are looking at a used travel trailer, the most important component to consider is the roof. In general, the roof of an RV or travel trailer will be the first component to break down. If the roof of a used trailer is in excellent condition, it’s a good indication that the trailer will be a worthwhile investment.

Other ways to extend the life of your travel trailer include storing it properly in a shed, garage, or barn, or underneath a carport or overhang. Protecting the roof of your trailer against rain, wind, or hail damage will help lengthen the lifespan of your trailer.

What travel trailers are the lightest?

An ordinary travel trailer might weigh up to 5,200 lbs., but lightweight travel trailers can weigh as little as 1,800-3,000 lbs. or less. Because of their small size, travel trailers are an excellent choice for anyone who prioritizes space. Some units come with a range of added features that maximize the space and amenities such as a power awning, high-quality countertops, LED lighting, solar panels, flat-screen TVs, and exterior speakers.

If you are unsure what size travel trailer to purchase, check for the trailer’s Gross Vehicle Weight or GVW (also called curb weight). Then, estimate the weight of all your belongings, fuel, and any passengers. Finally, check the weight capacity of your towing vehicle. This should be printed in your owner’s manual or on the doorjamb. As long as the weight of the loaded trailer is less than the weight capacity of your towing vehicle, you will be able to tow the trailer without an issue.

How much does a used travel trailer cost?

A used travel trailer may cost anywhere from $12,000 to $60,000, depending on the make, model, and condition of the trailer. In general, trailers with bare-bones features, basic appliances, and low-cost craftsmanship will run on the lower end.  Trailers with lots of added amenities like high-end appliances and quality construction will cost more.

When you are deciding how much to spend on a travel trailer, consider how often you plan to use it. If you are a full-time RV lifer or plan to spend a lot of time on the road, consider investing in a trailer with high-quality appliances and amenities. Budget trailers can be a good investment for many people, especially couples and those just starting out in the RV life.

What is the most popular travel trailer?

Some of the most popular travel trailer styles include luxury units with plenty of added amenities, compact aluminum trailers with generous storage space, or budget-friendly options that can sleep up to four. The right travel trailer for you depends on your needs. For example, are you on a budget, or are you seeking the highest possible quality? Do you plan to live in your trailer full-time, or are you looking for a vehicle to accommodate your weekend adventures? What kind of vehicle do you plan to use to tow the trailer?

For full-time RV lifers who want to invest in a luxury option, look for high-quality units that feature various floor plans, styles, and design options. Often, these models range from 16 to 33 ft. and come equipped with new appliances and plenty of storage space. For couples on a budget or weekend travelers, look for compact units that can be pulled with a small towing vehicle.
