When shopping for any RV, it’s not uncommon to compare Super Cs, Class As, and fifth wheels, regardless of specialty uses. On paper, these classes seem similar in size or capability, but their layouts and design priorities can lead to very different experiences, especially if accessibility is among your top considerations. So adding wheelchair accessibility requirements introduces another layer of complexity to the decision.

Accessibility in RVs is influenced by length, engine type, interior layout, entry height, and how consistently you can move through the space. Each RV class approaches design differently, which directly impacts usability for travelers who use wheelchairs. Understanding those differences can help narrow down which type of RV is most practical for your mobility needs, both on the road and while parked.

Key accessibility differences at a glance

RV Class/Type

Accessibility Consideration

Class AMost consistent factory-built accessibility
Super CStrong towing and structure, but variable interior accessibility
Fifth WheelsBest suited for customization rather than factory mobility design

These differences are often most noticeable when stepping inside each RV type in person, where layout differences tend to matter more than exterior size or specs.

Where Class C and B RVs fit in this comparison

Class B camper vans and Class C motorhomes are less commonly used as factory-built wheelchair-accessible RV platforms due to their narrower interiors and structural design constraints. While both can be modified for accessibility in certain cases, they typically require more customization and offer less open interior space than Class A motorhomes and larger, purpose-built accessibility-focused RV floor plans.

Class A RVs: The consistent accessibility foundation

Class A RVs are the most common foundation for factory-built wheelchair-accessible RVs. Their flat, wide chassis design allows manufacturers to build continuous living spaces without major internal steps or transitions. This creates a more predictable environment for accessibility-focused floor plans, including features like wider aisleways, roll-in showers, and open kitchen layouts.

For many travelers, the biggest advantage of Class A coaches is the ability to purchase a wheelchair-accessible option directly and the overall flow of the interior space. This often means being able to move from the bedroom to the kitchen or bathroom without needing to navigate steps or tight transitions, which becomes especially noticeable during longer stays at a campground or when traveling with slides extended.

Why Super C RVs are less common for accessibility builds

Super C motorhomes offer heavy-duty chassis strength and towing capability, but accessibility varies significantly by make, model, and floor plan. One of the main challenges is entry height and cab design, which can introduce steps or tighter transitions between living areas. Interior layouts are also more segmented than those of Class A coaches, which limits continuous open movement, depending on the design. Common limitations include:

  • Higher entry point into the coach
  • Interior steps or level changes
  • Narrower aisleways in some floor plans
  • Fewer factory-built accessibility packages
  • More customization required for full accessibility

Many owners notice this most when moving between the cab area and the main living space, where even a small step or narrower hallway can require more deliberate movement depending on the layout. That said, some Super C models can work well for accessibility when specifically built or modified with mobility in mind. The main focus is always the floor plan, rather than the vehicle class.

Newmar's Canyon Star toy hauler features a large garage at the rear of the RV, which can be modified for additional space and wheelchair accessibility.

When a fifth wheel or toy hauler can work for accessibility

Fifth wheels are not typically factory-designed with accessibility as a primary focus, but they can work well in certain custom scenarios. They are most practical when the goal is a stationary or semi-permanent setup, rather than frequent travel with full interior mobility needs. Fifth wheels can be a good fit when:

  • You’re open to custom modifications
  • You want a large, open interior footprint (especially toy hauler layouts)
  • The RV will be used primarily in one location or seasonally
  • You plan to add external lift or ramp systems

While flexible, fifth wheels often present challenges such as:

  • Exterior steps or steep entry angles
  • Interior level changes between rooms
  • Narrower hallways in some layouts
  • Limited factory-built accessibility options

These limitations become more noticeable when moving between levels or when using the RV independently, especially in layouts where the bedroom or bathroom is elevated above the main living area.

Toy haulers tend to offer flexibility, as the rear garage can be converted into an open living space and the ramps are designed to support motorcycles and quads (which are usually heavier than wheelchairs), but most of the time, fifth wheel accessibility is achieved through customization rather than factory design. In these setups, the open rear garage space can make initial entry easier, but interior transitions still depend heavily on how the space has been modified.

What really matters when choosing between them

Beyond RV type, the most important factor is how the interior space supports real-world movement. Turning radius, bathroom usability, and the ability to move comfortably between living zones often matter more than exterior specifications.

Two RVs of the same length can feel completely different once inside, depending on accessibility integration and floor plan configuration. There is no single “best” RV for accessibility; the right choice depends on how the space functions for your daily travel needs and how much customization you want to take on.
