The West Coast, or as the locals like to call it, “the best coast,” is a dream road trip destination for many. The rugged mountains of the West contrasted with the stunning waters of the Pacific create an enchanting destination drawing visitors from around the globe. From an iconic drive up Highway 1 to a stop in the fish markets of Seattle, there are more places to explore on the West Coast than could possibly fit into a short trip. And while it’s almost impossible to go wrong with any location you choose, the following are the top five West Coast RV destinations that are well worth the trip.

Sunset over the ocean at Olympic National Park

#1: Olympic National Park, Washington State

Glacier-capped mountains, temperate rainforests, wild coastlines, and more all come together in one magical place — Olympic National Park. Located in Washington State, this national park is a must-see destination for a West Coast RV trip. The incredible diversity in the park’s ecosystem makes it unlike any other place in the US.

Adding to the appeal of this park for RVers is the fact that you can camp within the park, providing you with the ultimate access to this outdoor wonderland. Located within the park is an RV resort with full hook-up sites, a restaurant, deli, boat rentals, and a general store where you can pick up beer, wine, sandwiches, ice cream, candy, clothing, and more.

Must-Do Activities in the Park

While visiting Olympic National Park, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. Fishing is a popular pastime with the park’s numerous lakes, rivers, and oceanfront access.

Another fun activity for the whole family is tidepooling. The park is home to an incredible array of marine life where you can spend time exploring the area’s tidepools and observe this unique animal life up close.

Aerial view of Crater Lake

#2: Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Over 7,000 years ago, a violent eruption triggered the collapse of a mountain peak, leading to what is known today as Crater Lake. Fed entirely by rain and snow, this is the deepest lake in the United States and is strikingly pristine. The blue color of the lake is otherworldly and will leave you marveling at this act of nature.

When choosing a campground within the park, Mazama Campground is the ideal choice for RVs. Nestled in an old-growth forest at an elevation of 6,000 feet, campsites come equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-resistant food locker. This campground also features a small camp store, a dump station, and internet connectivity.

Must-Do Activities in the Park

One of the top activities in the Crater Lake National Park is a drive around the crater’s rim. A 33-mile road circles Crater Lake and features 30 overlooks perfect for snapping a photo of the stunning colors of the lake.

Additionally, the park is home to over ninety miles of trails, which allow hiking enthusiasts to stretch their legs and enjoy the varied terrain of the park.

#3: Nehalem Bay State Park, Oregon

Located near Tillamook, Oregon, Nehalem Bay State Park is situated between the ocean and the bay. Visitors will be treated to stunning views of the area’s diverse mix of geological wonders. Stroll across sandy beaches, clamor along the rocky shores, and stand in awe of towering capes.

The campground located within the park allows visitors to enjoy camping among the shore pines, and the beach is only a sand dune away from your RV door. Sites with water and electric are available, and the campground features bathrooms, showers, and an RV dump station.

Must-Do Activities in the Park

There are ample opportunities for things to do within this state park. A forested bike path offers views of the bay, and kayaking gives visitors the chance to get closer to the waters. Crabbing, fishing, and clamming are excellent ways to enjoy the ocean’s bounties, and tidepooling allows you to observe the diverse marine life up close.

Nature lovers from around the world visit this park in hopes of catching a glimpse of the area’s gray whales. In winter, nearly 25,000 gray whales migrate through the area, heading to the warmer waters of Baja, Mexico. In spring, the opposite migration takes place as the whales head back to Alaska.

Trailhead at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

#4: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, California

Located up iconic Highway 1 lies Big Sur. Nicknamed the “mini Yosemite,” Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park provides an incredible chance to stand among the state’s towering redwoods.

With a large campground, RVers have plenty of choices for an overnight stay with many premiere campsites located on the Big Sur River. Book well in advance as this campground sells out year-round. While RV sites are not equipped with hookups, the campground features toilets, showers, and fresh water.

Must-Do Activities in the Park

With over 1,000 acres of hiking, one of the most popular activities in this park is walking along the river, marveling at the expansive size of the redwoods, and taking in the abundant wildlife. Additionally, swimming in the Big Sur River is a popular summertime activity, providing the perfect place to cool down after a long day hiking the trails.

View from the ocean of Doheny State Beach

#5: Doheny State Beach, California

Located in the city of Dana Point, Doheny State Beach is a marvelous park that draws in around one million visitors a year. Donated by oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny in 1931 for public use, it is California’s first state beach.

Considered one of California’s premier camping locations, the park’s campsites are located only steps away from the beach, making it a must-see stop for RVers. Enjoy access to showers, toilets, water, and a dump station during your stay. Firewood can be purchased from the campground host, and a stay here provides you with access to a 5-acre picnic area with pavilions, tables and grills, a volleyball court, walking trails, and a ranger station for more information.

Must-Do Activities in the Park

For those who are ready to brave the waves, Doheny State Beach is a popular surfing destination. Additionally, surf fishing is a widely enjoyed sport within the park.

Families and visitors looking for more low-key options will enjoy exploring the park’s tidepools or the visitor center’s aquariums.
