Standing at the pump lately feels a little different. You’re watching the price per gallon climb, doing the quick math in your head, and wondering if that next trip is still worth it.

The reality is, every time you fill up at the pump, the price hits your wallet a little harder. And the question that’s on the top of your mind, “What’s the best way to save gas in my RV?”

The good news is that, with a few budget-first choices, you can still get out on the road, enjoy the trip, and keep your wallet in check. Here are a few tips to get you started on saving.

Rethink how far you drive

As gas prices rise, one of the best ways to save fuel starts before you even leave the driveway.

Long cross-country trips use a lot of fuel, especially in a larger RV. A shorter trip nearby can offer the same change of scenery without the extra cost. Staying put a little longer instead of hopping between stops also helps you get more value out of every mile.

If you’re tempted to take a cross-country trip, it may be a better idea to spend a little bit longer in each region of the country rather than going coast to coast right away. You still get the time away, but with fewer rushed travel days and more time to actually enjoy each stop.

Make the most of your RV’s power systems

Your RV is a fully-equipped space with its own power systems, and how you use them affects overall fuel consumption. Generators, for example, are super useful, especially when you’re off-grid, but running them longer than necessary can increase fuel usage without you realizing it.

Keep the seasons in mind, too. Running the AC in the summer, for example, will drain your generator faster than you might expect. The same goes for your onboard energy use. Lights, appliances, and entertainment systems all draw power. Using only what you need, when you need it, helps reduce strain on your system.

If your RV is equipped with newer battery technology or solar power, you’re already in a good position to extend your range without constantly refilling the tank. Comfort stays the same while your setup works more efficiently between refuels and recharge stops.

Plan ahead to avoid wasting fuel

A little planning can go a long way toward saving on gas. In fact, some of the biggest savings happen before you even leave your driveway, if you’re willing to do a little research first.

Mapping your route ahead of time helps you avoid backtracking, missed turns, or unnecessary detours. Sticking to a clear plan keeps your miles down and your fuel use manageable. It also helps to group your stops together instead of making multiple short trips once you arrive.

Traffic is another factor to consider. Sitting in stop-and-go traffic burns fuel faster than steady highway driving. If you can plan your travel times to avoid peak congestion, you’ll not only save fuel but also make the drive more enjoyable.

Choosing where you stay matters too. Campgrounds with hookups can reduce your reliance on your generator, helping you conserve fuel throughout your trip.

Simple habits that help you conserve energy (and fuel)

Before every trip, a quick check like this can help you avoid wasting fuel without even thinking about it.

  • Turn off the engine instead of letting it idle during stops
  • Limit generator use when it’s not necessary
  • Keep tires inflated and in good shape to improve fuel efficiency
  • Remove extra gear or weight you don’t need on the trip
  • Use campground hookups when available instead of onboard power
  • Stay on top of routine maintenance to keep everything running efficiently

Fuel prices may not be where anyone wants them right now, and every RVer is struggling with them in some way. At the same time, RVing has always been about the experience. The flexibility to travel on your terms, the ability to bring your space with you, and the chance to explore places you might not otherwise reach.

Those things haven’t changed. You may just need to approach it a little differently.
