So you’re ready to leave the campground life in the dust and head off-grid? Make sure you choose an RV that’s designed for the most rugged terrains you’ll traverse and boondocking conditions! There are plenty of options out there, so we’ve assembled a top-five list to help you make the best choice for your next big adventure.

What to look for in a backcountry base campervan

No matter what make/model you choose for your backcountry base camp, there are a couple of things to consider. Of course, everyone is different and has different priorities and preferences when driving and camping, so consider yours and your use case as you make this decision.

Aerial view of solar panels on an RV

Solar

If there's a chance you'll add a solar package later, opt for an RV prewired for solar. Better yet, choose one prewired for an inverter, which should give you at least 110-volt power usage while boondocking. Many models offer roof-mounted solar kits as optional upgrades, and it's often a good idea to go for manufacturer packages.

Fresh water capacity

Consider the size of the fresh water tank you’ll need when camping off the grid. Tank sizes vary significantly among RVs, ranging from eight to 55 gallons in our featured RVs. This diversity provides options within the same travel trailer class, so it’s definitely something to keep an eye on as you make your decision.

Propane and 12-volt powered appliances

When you're off the grid without shore power, you’ll want to ensure your refrigerator, cooktop, oven, and TV can operate on 12-volt batteries or propane gas. To accomplish this, you should probably avoid residential appliances as they demand significantly greater energy draw.

Elevated axles and a sturdy frame

For navigating unpaved roads and rugged terrain, you’ll want to consider RVs with heavy-duty frames and raised axles, as these offer enough ground clearance. Many campers in this category provide all-terrain tires, either as standard or optional upgrades.

Adequate grey and black water tank capacity

Larger gray and black water tanks extend sink, shower, and toilet use without frequent dumping. Some campervans lack these tanks, while others have combo or separate tanks of up to 30 gallons each. You’ll want to choose a model that meets your usage requirements.

5 RVs to consider as a backcountry basecamp

Without further ado, here are 5 RVs we recommend considering as a boondocking basecamp!

1. Winnebago Revel

The Winnebago Revel, powered by its diesel engine and assembled on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis, ensures top-notch on- and off-road performance. With its 3-liter turbo engine, the van delivers smooth acceleration, reliable power, and fuel efficiency. When venturing to remote campsites, the Revel offers on-demand four-wheel-drive, a robust suspension, high and low gearing, and hill-descent assist.

Side view of the Revel

Once you reach your destination, the Revel is also built for comfort, including a 320-amp hour onboard battery pack linked to a 2,000-watt inverter for ample on-the-go power. This Class B campervan includes a hydronic heating system, side and rear screen doors, and a Bluetooth-controlled powered awning with LED lighting. Optional additions include solar panels and an air conditioner.

Winnebago additionally prioritized interior features in the Revel, offering a galley kitchen equipped with a single burner induction stove, a stainless steel sink, and a 3 cubic-foot refrigerator/freezer. The full-size bed comfortably sleeps two and can be lifted out of the way when not in use, revealing a gear garage with ample storage space. The van also includes a shower, cassette toilet, and features fresh and gray water tanks.

In short, wherever you want to go, the Revel is ready.

2. Winnebago Solis

The Winnebago Solis stands out as one of the most versatile Class B RVs available, catering to an active lifestyle wherever your outdoor adventures take you. Assembled on a RamProMaster platform, this campervan can sleep up to four people (!).

Solis

Standout features include a pop-top sleeping area, side and rear screen doors, roof vents, and underfloor storage. The van also includes heavy-duty vinyl flooring, LED lighting, and a digital touch panel for system monitoring. While a Truma Combi Eco heating system is standard, air conditioning is optional, and a Cummins Onan generator and a 220-watt solar panel are included.

Inside, the Solis offers a well-equipped space with a two-burner range top stove with a glass cover, a 3 cubic-foot refrigerator/freezer, a stainless-steel sink, and a spice rack. A Murphy bed provides additional sleeping quarters with concealed gear storage beneath. The wet bath features a cassette toilet and shower with an Eco-Hot water system. Ceiling-to-floor insulation ensures comfort in various weather conditions, and USB charging points are strategically placed throughout the cabin.

With its sleep capacity, storage, and off-grid capabilities, the Solis is built to take your whole family deep in the backcountry for as long as your imagination is.

3. Thor Scope

The perfect companion for even the most rugged trips, the Thor Scope® is packed with features that make it one of the most fun drives on our list. Assembled on the durable RAM ProMaster 1500 XT chassis and powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, the Scope can haul up to 5,000 lb of gear, making this van perfect for mountain bikers, full-time adventurers, and weekenders alike.

Thor Scope

The Scope's effortless handling and fuel efficiency make every journey a breeze. Its cost-effective design, available in 2 flexible floor plans, also helps you save on gas and overall travel expenses, giving you the freedom to pursue every unforgettable experience, wherever you wander.

4. Winnebago Travato

The bestselling Winnebago Travato spearheaded the campervan revolution in 2014 and continues to lead the industry in camper van innovation. At a compact 21 feet, it maneuvers more like a daily driver than an RV, offering unmatched flexibility for solo or small-party camping.

Its patented suspension system enhances load capacity, height clearance, and ride quality. With plenty of insulation, dual-pane windows, and heated tanks, the Travato extends your camping season so you can hit the road in any weather.

Its careful floor plan design makes the Winnebago Travato’s kitchenette surprisingly functional in all four floor plans. Featuring Corian® countertops with flip-up extensions for easy meal prep, a single or 2-burner range cooktop with glass covers, and a 4.3 or 6-cubic-foot refrigerator, you can glamp with gourmet meals, wherever you go. So go on and load the bikes on the rack for your next adventure with Winnebago Travato.

5. Antero Adventure Vans

Make the most of your adventure and the van itself with Antero. Designed to maximize their lifespan through tough adventures, Antero Adventure Motors builds campervans that are built to last through the toughest terrains. The brand prides itself on “usability, flexibility, and durability,” seamlessly blending these qualities into powerful and spacious vehicles that are equipped with impressive off-grid capabilities.
