5 tips to make your RV feel more like home

If you’re used to homes that don’t have wheels, spending time in an RV can take some getting used to. RVs made by manufacturers like Newmar and Winnebago are full of modern features and elegant designs, but it's up to each traveler to add unique flair that makes their motorhome feel like theirs. If you’re worried about beating homesickness and feeling totally at ease in your RV, keep reading to hear our tips for making your coach feel just like home.
1. Hang up pictures
If you want your next trip to be picture-perfect, try hanging up fond memories that you can look at while you travel. Photographs make great decorations, and they can also play a huge role in making your RV feel like home. Whether you’re visiting Florida’s sunny beaches or exploring forests in Washington, it can be comforting to bring along memories of the people and places you love.

Before heading off on an RV adventure, print out some of your favorite pictures and display them around your coach. Nothing will make you feel more at home than looking at the smiling faces of your mom, dad, brother, or sister as you drive in the cockpit or cook in the kitchen. Once your RV is filled with happy memories, you’ll forget you haven’t lived there your whole life.
2. Channel your personal style
Maybe this one goes without saying, but customized interior design truly is the key to making your RV feel more like your home and less like a fancy hotel room. Everyone has their own unique tastes, and you should feel free to let your imagination run wild when decorating your motorhome.

Don’t just decorate based on RV magazines or model decor after vehicles you’ve seen on TV: consider your personal style, and weave it into your motor home. If you’re all about bohemian whimsy, transform your RV into a haven for free-spirited travelers. If coastal chic is more your style, buy all of the seashell-themed accessories your heart desires! Once you let your one-of-a-kind personality shine throughout your RV, you’re sure to settle right in and feel at home.
3. Try DIY
After you’ve infused your own style in every room of your RV, add even more personal touches by creating DIY (or “do it yourself”) projects. From unique homemade throw pillows to fun picture frames, you can make all of the arts and crafts you set your mind to as long as you have the right supplies.

For the truly adventurous among us, consider making your own curtains, refinishing/painting cabinetry, weaving your own entryway rug, or macraming a plant holder. Truly, the sky is the limit for adding your creative touch to your RV home.
When you decorate your space with items you created yourself, it will feel all the more homelike and special. DIY projects aren’t just for aesthetic appeal—the process of making them can be a lot of fun, so get a few friends together and flex your creative muscles. Before you know it, your RV will be overflowing with art, furniture, and other little touches made for you and by you.
4. Embrace holiday celebrations
Nothing makes a space feel more like home than sprucing it up with holiday decor. Whether you’re hanging up stars and stripes in the summer or putting up a menorah during colder months, decorating your motorhome for celebrations will make it all the more comfortable.

If you’re RV traveling during a holiday season, don’t just let it pass you by without a thought. Celebrate on the road with fun decorations, and you can experience holiday magic in your own home on the road.
5. Channel your inner home chef
Close your eyes, breathe in, and imagine the smell of your favorite meal wafting into the room. Aren’t you overcome with a sense of calm? Now imagine experiencing that inside an RV, the scent lingering in your nose as you cozy up in your vehicle’s dinette.

Good food has a way of comforting us, so you should use the cooking capabilities you have when RV traveling. Take out your grill or just take a turn in the kitchen of your motorhome, and bring the delicious tastes of home alive in your RV.
6. Spruce up with plants
One of the simplest ways to breathe life into your RV is—literally—with plants! Whether you're living in your RV full-time or just for a few days/weeks, a few potted pals are sure to add comfort and home appeal to your space. Think small: succulents or orchids on windowsills, hanging pothos or ferns in the shower, or a cheerful herb garden in your kitchen nook or vertical space.

If you're new to gardening or worried about keeping plants alive on the road, we'd recommend a low-maintenance starter plant like a cactus (or even a fake one! Ha!). Just make sure to secure them before you drive—bungee cords, hanging baskets (remember those macrame plant holders you made?!), and grippy mats work well to keep things in place while you're on the go.
