Coffee Options On The Road

coffee Spend any time out on the open road, and it’s quickly apparent that great coffee is a city mouse’s luxury. The average gas station’s coffee is liable to give you heartburn at best and strip paint at its worst. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for terrible coffee. Here are some tips for enjoying the best coffee, even out on the open road.

The Coffee Lover’s Guide to the Road

Storage. The enemy of coffee is air, which robs coffee first of its flavor, and then turns it stale. For best results, keep your coffee in bean form as long as possible, and store it protected from air, in a sealed jar, or even Ziploc bag. Grinding coffee for storage will quickly ruin its flavor profile.

Grinding. A nice electric grinder can set you back quite a chunk of cash, but don’t despair. If you can’t afford a powered grinder, there are a few hand-powered options available that will do the job just as well, as long as you have the elbow grease. At first, using a hand-cranked grinder might seem a tad too rustic, but it doesn’t take long to grind out a pot’s worth of beans, and you might appreciate the ritual.

Brewing. These days there are more ways to brew than ever before. You can go with a conventional coffee pot, or a french press pitcher, which brews great coffee but is more laborious to clean. There are lesser-known options as well, such as the Aeropress, which brews single cups of espresso in a very travel-friendly contraption that costs less than $30. There is also the Chemex pitcher, which brews some of the smoothest coffee around, although the glass pitcher may not be the best option, depending on your storage options.

Even if you don’t have access to boiling water, there are options to cold brew coffee, which results in some of the smoothest, strongest stuff you’ll ever sip. Simply put, if you’re suffering gas station coffee in this day and age, you have no one to blame but yourself.
