Apps For The Road

When you’re out on the open road, sometimes the only tool at your disposal is your smart phone. Today’s smart phones are equipped with GPS and map features that make cross-country exploration a breeze. But your phone can be used for more than just simple navigation, it can be used for a wealth of information and entertainment on the road. Here are just a few of our picks for the best apps for the road.

Best APPS for a road trip

Red Cross First Aid. This invaluable app might be free, but it could be the difference between life and death out on the road. The app gives you easy, step-by-step instructions for a variety of common first aid situations, such as burns, choking, or heart attack. All of the information is preloaded into the app, so you don’t have to worry about lack of service if you’re stuck in a dead zone. You can call 911 through the app, so if you regain service you can call immediately. In addition to the simple information, the app has a quiz mode you can keep yourself occupied with and earn badges, all while refreshing (or learning) basic first aid.

Yelp. This consumer reviews site might be packed with nitpickers, but using your phone’s GPS it can tell you where to find good food, coffee, or, well, pretty much anything in a new area. You can browse restaurants and read reviews from everyday people to make your decision without ever leaving your car. Also many businesses offer incentives to ‘check in’ with them using the app, which can make your visit profitable.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox. If you have a little one, there will be a point in your journey where they are just plain bored. They’ve looked at all of the books, colored their crayons into stubs, and sang every song they know. The Monkey Preschool Lunchbox app is a super simple, instantly addictive learning game for kids age 2-5. The game has no end, so your child can play it either until the batteries die or you reach your destination. One bit of advice: provide headphones! The app is a great way to find last-minute deals on rooms all over the country. Make sure to join their club so you earn points on every hotel room- they add up fast and free rooms are always handy!
